DENMARK (1894–1967) Trained as an architect, Poul Henningsen is best known for a series of lighting fixtures that resulted from his fascination with the then-new technology of the electric light bulb. Poul Henningsen lyckades med all sin fokus på belysning finna fyra dilemman när det gällde glödlampan. The lamp, whose three-part shade is said to be inspired by the arrangement of a dinner plate atop a soup bowl atop a teacup, became the basis for Henningsen’s most successful design, the PH 4/3 desk lamp. Henningsen imitated the soft light of an oil lamp. Henningsen studied architecture and worked in Copenhagen from 1920 onwards. In addition to buildings, he designed, for example, a part of the capital’s famous Tivoli and decorated theaters.

So when Simon P Henningsen created his own first light in 1954 (see left) and it was presented in the press, it was predictably dubbed an SH-lamp. Simon modestly said, “My shade isn't composed nearly as scientifically as those of my father,” which was true, but perhaps also an understated way of saying that he was not his father, and had something quite different to offer. Illuminated Living. Many of Poul Henningsen’s designs are as relevant today as they were in the first half of the 21st Century. Having become one of Denmark’s authorities on lighting theory, Poul Henningsen designed the PH lamp in 1925, a lighting icon inspired by the way natural light falls through the foliage of a tree, providing illumination that is devoid of obtrusive glare.
